Surrey & Portsmouth

Where work trips became photography trips

Over the last four and a half years, I’ve travelled to the south east of the UK for my day job. The company I work for organises two-day on-site meetings four or five times a year, which has given me the chance to visit places such as Guildford, East Horsley, Redhill and Portsmouth.

Whenever the weather allowed, I would head out in my free time with my camera to explore the places we visited, capture a few memories and, of course, practise my photography. None of my travel photography is planned. Until very recently, I rarely planned photography sessions, and even now I only do so for very specific situations.

My travel photography is spontaneous and comes from simply exploring wherever I happen to be. That’s why I always carry my camera with me. Sometimes I’ll bring a larger collection of lenses; other times, I’ll take just one or two, such as my 35mm, which I’m still trying to master.

For me, that’s part of what makes travel photography so enjoyable: having a camera with me, wandering around somewhere unfamiliar, and seeing what catches my eye.
