This trip to Denmark was a purely recreational one, and one I took with my brother. We spent most of our time in Copenhagen, exploring the city and its many landmarks, before heading to Billund for two days dedicated to something we have both been fans of for as long as I can remember: LEGO.
Photography-wise, the main theme of the trip was cityscapes. Fortunately, the weather couldn’t have been much better. The combination of clear skies, good light and Copenhagen’s mix of historic buildings, colourful streets and modern architecture made the city a great place to explore with a camera.
We spent our time in Copenhagen visiting many of the city’s landmarks, including Nyhavn, Rosenborg Slot and the Botanisk Have. We also visited the zoo, several museums and various other parts of the city centre. With so much to see within a relatively small area, much of the trip naturally became a mix of sightseeing and wandering around with the camera.
After Copenhagen, we headed to Billund for two days. As LEGO fans, visiting LEGO House and Legoland was probably the part of the trip we were looking forward to most.
LEGO House was particularly interesting because it goes far beyond simply displaying LEGO sets. We spent a surprising amount of time reading through the history of the company and learning how LEGO developed from a small Danish toy manufacturer into what it is today. We also had lunch at Mini Chef, the LEGO-themed restaurant where your meal is assembled and ordered using LEGO bricks. It was a suitably LEGO experience from start to finish.
We also got to see the LEGO headquarters in Billund and, of course, spent a full day at the original Legoland. Having grown up with LEGO, there was something particularly enjoyable about visiting the very first Legoland and seeing how the idea that started in Billund has evolved into such a large attraction.
Our time in Billund also gave us an unexpected bonus. We came across a local car meet featuring a selection of classic cars. It wasn’t something we had planned for, but it made for a nice change of subject and, naturally, gave me another reason to take the camera out.
Between Copenhagen’s streets and architecture, the LEGO world of Billund and a few unexpected discoveries along the way, the trip gave me plenty to photograph. More importantly, it was simply a great few days away with my brother, exploring somewhere new and indulging in a shared obsession along the way.
